Laptop Crash of 2008 Phase 4

So after about 3 days or so, Countless different drivers, scripts, and forum posts, I finally got the wireless to work...sort of.

I got the computer to recognise the driver that I had, which was an Atheros, But now I can get the system to read WEP. It is an insecure system but at least its better then nothing. The default program that handles the Wireless on Ubuntu is the Gnome Netowork Manager. From the forums (and my experence) is that this sucks. Fortunatly I found a new one that is supposedly better. This program called WICD is designed to save your settings as well as make it easer to connect. Sadly it has issues with WEP system. There are Templates that you can use to help it along, Its just hard as hell to figure it out.

Ill post more info on how I got the Wireless to work on here soon. But for now Ill leave it as it is.

Laptop Crash of 2008 Phase 3

I am guessing that Ubuntu changed the way they run things on there installs. I was only able to load Ubuntu off of a windows installer rather then the Live CD. This installation of Ubuntu was the Hardy Hereon version. I opened the program on XP and the installation files on its own. I then rebooted the system and found that Ubuntu had configured the Windows Startup and Recovery system to load itself up. (at least I don't need to load up GRUB for this one.)
The Ubuntu initial install desktop showed up. I click on the "install" executable and followed the setup wizard, I allocated 30GB to Ubuntu.

The next phase is typically where I give in. I have always had problems installing internet connections to any Linux system. However I have found some pretty promising tutorials on getting Wireless to work. Here's hoping!

Laptop Crash of 2008 Phase 2

XP Installed with no issues. (although I did make the mistake of downloading the Genuine Advantage when the OS was anything but genuine) I did have a bunch of Driver issues (as expected.) Fortunately, finding these drivers were far easier then I had previously anticipated.
After I got all of the drivers loaded and the essentials installed (ie Firefox) I started to run a Diskcheck and defrag. Tomarrow I will start installing Ubuntu.

Laptop Crash of 2008 Phase 1

So the first thing I did was look for any information on duel-booting XP with Ubuntu. I found (as expected) plenty of information. Since Microsoft Windows dose not like to play nicely with any thing that is not Microsoft, I decided the best way to do this is by loading XP first and then letting
Ubuntu do its magic.

This will come in several Phases.
Phase 1, Install XP
Phase 2, Configure XP and Load Drivers
Phase 3, Install Ubuntu
Phase 4, Get Ubuntu on Wireless
Phase 5, Get Ubuntu Configured with other issues
Phase 6, Install Wine
Phase 7, Get World of Warcraft installed on Ubuntu via Wine

This is origionaly a Vista machine, As rumors had it, finding XP drivers for a Vista machine would be quite dificult. But I supose the first thing is first and install XP.

Laptop Crash of 2008

So my laptop crashed tonight.
I was sitting at the Helpdesk working the graveyard shift, bored out of my mind. I brought my Laptop with me just in case. I decided to load up Civ4 that I had found on my laptop. I had it on before with no problems but I have long-since uninstalled it. Well this was unfortunate because this caused my laptop to crash. No Blue Screen of Death, just go black.

My first reaction was just to reboot. But I would get to a point and my screen would go black and hang at this point. In safe mode you could see that there was one driver that it would hang up on. Since I couldn't get safe mode to work, and since everything I needed off of my computer was ether already backed up on my desktop or could be easily obtained again, I decided that this would be a good opportunity to load up Ubuntu on my laptop agian. However, I decided to install XP in addition, sort of as a fail-safe. I will most likely start tonight or tomarrow night.
